Travel

To Columbia by Air

New York City is serviced by LaGuardia, Kennedy, and Newark aiports.

Public Transportation from the Airports:

LaGuardia: Take the M60 bus to 116th and Broadway. (Pretty nice and interesting ride, takes about 40 minutes.).

Kennedy: Take the AirTrain monorail train to Jamaica, Queens. Transfer to the Long Island Railroad going to Penn Station. Take a 1 local subway train uptown, getting off at 116th St. and Broadway. It is very important to transfer -- otherwise you will end up in the Bronx. (This takes about an hour.)

Newark: Take the AirTrain Newark system to connect to a New Jersey Transit train, (NJ Transit system map), going on the Northeast Corridor Line from Newark Airport to Penn Station. Take a 2 or 3 express subway train uptown to 96th Street. Transfer to the 1 local train, getting off at 116th St. and Broadway. It is very important to transfer -- otherwise you will end up in the Bronx. (This takes about an hour.)

By taxi, shuttle services, or private bus companies:

Taxi service is available to the campus (prices not including tip: about $25 from LaGuardia, a flat rate of $45 plus tolls from Kennedy, and about $55 plus tolls from Newark)

The Super Shuttle is a good option for inexpensive, door to door transportation, but duration of journey can be unpredictable. For information on other ground transportation shutttle services go to the following links: LaGuardia ground transport, Newark ground transport, Kennedy ground transport.

To Columbia by Train

Trains to New York arrive at Grand Central Station via Metronorth or Pennsylvania Station via Amtrak or LIRR, while buses stop at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Visitors arriving at these stations can take either public transportation or a taxi north to the campus.

Opening Evening Reception

The conference begins with a reception with light refreshments from 5p.m. - 7p.m. on Saturday, July 22nd in the Faculty Room of the Low Library on Columbia's main campus.

Andrew Fink and Jayant Kulkarni will be stationed at the entrance to the Low Library with packets and name tags for all conference participants starting shortly before 5 on Saturday and will direct attendees to the Faculty Room.

Conference Room

All sessions of the meeting will take place at Columbia's historic Faculty House, within the meeting room of the DeWitt Clinton dining room. Breakfast and Lunch will take place in the DeWitt Clinton dining room with great views of the city.

The Faculty House is located at 400 W. 117th St between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Park.

Accommodation

All rooms are in Furnald Hall, one of Columbia's oldest but very recently renovated residence halls. It has private, single rooms, with a few doubles for couples, as well as air conditioning in each room (a big plus in hot and humid New York City).

Furnald Hall is located at 2960 Broadway just south of 116th.

Checking In

The invited speakers to the meeting are being housed at the East Campus Hotel while the  other participants are being housed at Furnald Hall. The check-in information is the same for both places.

Check-in starts at 3:00 PM on the 22nd of July. You will need to go to Carman Hall, 545 W. 114 St., to the Conference Housing Desk to pick up your key and guest pass. The desk will then direct you to Furnald Hall or East Campus Hotel. At the end of the conference check-out is by 11:00 AM on the day you are to leave. You will have to go back to Carman Hall to turn in the key and guest pass in order to check out. Also if you get locked out of their room you will need to go to Carman Hall to be let in. If you loose the key it is a $65.00 charge for the lock and key.

Some of you are arriving at different times. This is not a problem. The Conference Housing Desk in Carman is open from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm seven days a week. You can come in at any time during these hours and someone will be there to check you in. If you show up when the office is closed, there will be a number on the door for the RA on duty. This person will come over to Carman Hall at whatever time to check the participant into their room.

Parking

It is difficult to find street parking in the city. The closest parking garage to Furnald, where you will be staying, is at 114th and Amsterdam. There are other garages in the area as well.

Internet

There is Ethernet access in all of the rooms. Just remember to get an Ethernet cable with you. You will also be able to get WiFi outside of the Residence Hall.

Dining

Breakfast and lunch will be provided at the Faculty House, but for dinner it would be cruel to keep visitors away from New York's many restaurants.

We have prepared a list of restaurants near Columbia's main campus. The restaurant's name in the list links to a description/review of the restaurant.

Other helpful dining resources can be found at the following links:

  • Columbia's own New York City guide offers links to many helpful websites, both for restaurants and other points of interest.
  • New York Times' dining section has reviews as well as a search function that allows the user to specify type of food, location, and price.
  • New York magazine's restaurant review page has articles as well as reviews.
  • Menupages and Citysearch both feature extensive listings of New York restaurants.
  • Columbia's Psychology Department has a brief but useful restaurant list for lunch and dinner.
  • Organizers
